Maya Preferences Settings

  • In the Maya Preferences, pick the Color Management section.
  • In the Color Management Preferences section, turn on Enable Color Management

3Delight Render Settings

  • Open the Render Settings window;
  • Make sure that Render Using is set to 3Delight;
  • In the Common tab, Color Management section, turn on Correct Gamma of Shader Color Attributes.

 

Colour Chooser Settings

  • Bring up the Color Chooser. For instance:
    • Select the default Lambert shader; 
    • In the Attribute Editor, click on the color rectangle of the Color attribute. A double-click will display the full version of the Color Chooser.
  • Make sure that Color Management is turned off.

 

 

Texture File Settings (Maya 2015 Extension)

In this Maya version, the texture color space options are more primitive. You can define a Default Input Color Space  in the preferences. When you create a new texture node, such as the File 2D Texture node, its Color Space attribute will be set to the value defined by the Default Input Color Space preference. You can manually override this setting for each texture node.

3Delight for Maya supports the following Input Color Spaces:

  • camera Rec 709
  • gamma 1.8 Rec 709
  • gamma 2.2 Rec 709
  • gamma 2.4 Rec 709 (video)
  • Raw
  • scene-linear CIE XYZ
  • scene-linear DCI-P3
  • scene-linear Rec 2020
  • scene-linear Rec 709 / sRGB
  • sRGB

 

  • In the Color Management section of the Maya Preferences, set the Default Input Color Space to the most commonly used one by your project's texture files.

 

  • In a texture node, such as a File 2D Texture node, adjust the Color Space attribute to the correct value for your texture. By default, for newly created nodes, it is set to the Default Input Color Space preference.

Modifying the Default Input Color Space will only affect texture nodes created after the preference change.

Setting Up Texture File Rules

The Color Management section of the Maya Preferences window contains a Input Color Space Rules section. You can define here associations between a texture color profile and file name patterns and extensions.

The Input Color Space Rules are saved as per-user preferences. They remain valid across all scenes.

  • In the rules list, select the Default entry. Make sure its Input Color Space setting is set to a profile that fits most of your project's textures.

 

  • If you are using HDR images in your project, you can add a rule so that Maya and 3Delight know they have a linear gamma:
    • Click Add and enter a rule name - "hdr" for instance.
    • Set Image Extension to "hdr". Note that the extensions are case-sensitive; if you use both the ".HDR" and ".hdr" extensions, you will need to define two distinct rules, or use an Image Name Pattern.
    • Set Input Color Space to Raw.
  • If your scene already contains File 2D Texture nodes, you can click Reapply Rules to Scene. This will change the Color Space attribute of all nodes using texture files.

You can define other files rules as needed by your project. 3Delight for Maya supports the following Input Color Spaces:

  • camera Rec 709
  • gamma 1.8 Rec 709
  • gamma 2.2 Rec 709
  • gamma 2.4 Rec 709 (video)
  • Raw
  • scene-linear CIE XYZ
  • scene-linear DCI-P3
  • scene-linear Rec 2020
  • scene-linear Rec 709 / sRGB
  • sRGB

Texture Nodes Settings

A portion of the File 2D Texture Node attributes.

  • Selecting an image in texture file nodes such as the File 2D Texture node or the PSD File node will automatically adjust its Color Space attribute based on the Input Color Spacerules defined above.
  • Once the image file is selected, you can manually override the Color Space setting made by the rules application. The supported Color Space values are listed above.

 

Render View Settings

 

  • The Render View will apply a gamma correction on the rendered image as specified by the View Transform setting in the Color Transform Preferences. You can temporarily override this setting in the option menu at the right end of the Viewport toolbar. 
  • You can change the Exposure value (default is 0.0) and the Gamma value (default is 1.0), but do not use these settings as a replacement of the proper value for the View Transform. In other words, it is preferable to pick sRGB gamma for the View Transform and leave Gamma at 1.0 instead of trying to use a Gamma value of 2.2 to emulate the sRGB gamma curve. 

The Exposure, Gamma and View Transform settings of the Render View toolbar are really temporary. Their values are not saved with the scene. In fact, they are not kept anywhere - if you close the window, these setting values are discarded.

 

i-DIsplay Settings



  • In the 3Delight Preferences window, set the Render View setting to 3Delight i-Display.

 

  • In i-Display (you can do a render in Maya to launch it), set the correct color profile for your setup in View → Color Profile.

 

Purpose

Light in 3Delight, like in real life, is linearly additive. To get predictable and physically correct results, inputs to the renderer should thus have a linear luminance (“gamma”). Displays do not have a linear luminance curve. So if the input was chosen visually on a computer screen, it should be adjusted to compensate the non-linearity of the screen.

Manual Method

Maya users used to do this compensation for color attributes in the Hypershade by attaching a contraption similar to this to all color attributes that needed to be "color managed" - i.e. have their luminance value linearized:

The Gamma Correct node's Value attribute is a color, chosen visually using the color Chooser. Its Gamma was set to (0.455, 0.455, 0.455), which assumes that the input color has a power-law gamma of 2.2; this node's output produce a linearized color. This value, which differs from the one chosen in the color Chooser, is the one used for shader evaluation.

3Delight for Maya Automatic Method (Maya 2015 and older)

This method is explained in details in this page. In a nutshell, in 3Delight for Maya, when the color management options are enabled, the shader color attribute values are automatically compensated so multiple gamma-correct node contraptions in your shading network are not needed.

Maya 2015 extension and more recent

In Maya 2015 Extension and more recent, the 3Delight for Maya automatic behaviour is still available, but disabled by default. It is controlled by two Render Settings:

Color Management Render Settings, in the Common tab when 3Delight is the current renderer.

Correct Gamma of Shader Color Attributes

Enables the 3Delight for Maya automatic shader color gamma linearization. This setting is off by default.

This setting should not be enabled if some shader colors when set with the Color Chooser when it has its Mixing Color Space setting set to Display Space. See below for details.

 

Maya color management options (2015 Extension and more recent)

Let’s look at how the new Maya color management features interact with shader color attributes. This is the default lambert shader in Maya 2016, with its Color attribute left at its default value of (r, g, b) = (0.5, 0.5, 0.5), with the Color Management feature turned off.

Color Management & The Color Chooser

Going back to the Lambert node, leave its Color attribute to its default value, and open the Color Chooser. It contains two new attributes compared to previous Maya versions.

Mixing Color Space

This option menu's value control a preference that can be set to Rendering Space or Display Space. Its effect is discussed below.

Color Management

This check box enables or disables the color management feature of the color Chooser only. When turned off, the Color Chooser behaves exactly like in previous Maya versions. Note that this control affects only the Color Chooser.

 

The Mixing Color Space and the Color Management gadgets control a Maya preference; a modified value will remain effective for all color attributes of all scenes.

 

Rendering Space as the Mixing Color Space

The actual attribute value is still (r, g, b) = (0.5, 0.5, 0.5) - as confirmed by a getAttr command. Notice the V value corresponds to the actual attribute value. Because Mixing Color Space is set to Rendering Space, the 0.5 value is assumed to be a value with linear luminance. The color Chooser attempts to show what that looks like in the sRGB space; a linear value of 0.5 corresponds to a sRGB value of 0.766. This is why the selected color displayed is a light grey.

So in this mode, the numeric values shown are exactly what the color attribute contains. The displayed colors attempt to replicate in the monitor's color space what the attribute's linear value looks like. This mode would be useful when adjusting a color attribute of that drives a bump node, a displacement shader, or any other node that is not supposed to be color-corrected. It can also be used to pick any color that needs to be color -corrected, such as surface shader colors. The drawback is that some controls are exponential, not linear The square . This makes picking some colors tricky. For instance, there is about 20% of the slider range left to cover saturation values from 0.5 to 1.0. The RGB sliders may look like on the following image; there is only a tiny range to cover G values from 0.579 up to 1.0.

Display Space as the Mixing Color Space
The V value shown is 0.735; it matches the selected color in the slider, large color square and color wheel. However, the actual attribute value is still  (r, g, b) = (0.5, 0.5, 0.5) - as confirmed by a getAttr command.
In other words, in this mode, you pick a color in the color Chooser; Maya automatically converts this value to a linear luminance value, and sets it in the attribute. No need for the Gamma Correct node anymore. This is the mode to use in general, for any color attribute that has to be color-corrected.

 

This new behaviour has a very important consequence: the actual values set in the color attributes themselves are, in both cases above, the linear luminance values. This means that 3Delight for Maya must not alter them in any way - its automatic behaviour must be turned off to avoid over-compensating color values. See Correct Gamma of Shader Color Attributes above.

 

Scenes designed with Maya 2015 and older loaded in 2015 Extension and more recent

If a scene's shading was elaborated with Maya 2015 or older, with the Color Management feature enabled, it is possible to preserve its rendered look in Maya 2015 Extension and more recent. 

  • Make sure the Enable Color Management is turned on in the Maya Preferences;
  • In the Color Chooser, either turn off the Color Management setting or make sure to only use Rendering Space as the Mixing Color Space;
  • If you have Displacement shaders that are using textures via File 2D Texture nodes, these File nodes will need to have their Color Space setting set to RAW or one of the scene-linear setting;
  • Turn on the Correct Gamma of Shader Color Attributes setting in the Render Settings window, Color Management section, when 3Delight is set as the current renderer.
